Myths, Doubts & Fears

Myths, Doubts & Fears

  • AGE of Donor DOES NOT MATTER … health & medical acceptability of Organ-Tissue matters.
  • There is NO BODY DISFIGUREMENT … retrieval surgeries are performed with utmost care & dignity. Surgical scar may be there, even in postmortem too.
  • Doctors’ focus is PATIENT’S LIFE. They would do all that is possible to save the patient’s life & restore health. A person’s pledge does not deter Doctors from trying enough to save that person.
  • My LOVED ONE’s heart is beating which means s/he is alive … why are you asking for organ donation? The heart has its own pacemaker independent of the brain. As long as it has oxygen, it continues to beat. In case of “Brain-Stem Death”, external ventilator is providing oxygen. But this is only for a short time. Eventually, the heart will stop, despite being on maximum life support machines.
  • “Organ-Tissue Donation” means NO EXTRA EXPENSE for Family … From the time, family agrees for “Organ-Tissue Donation”, until the deceased body is handed over, all expenses are taken care of by the hospital handling transplant.
  • Religion & Faith … All religions & faiths support “Organ-Tissue Donation”. Please speak to your Religious/Faith/Spiritual Leader for more clarification.
  • Organ-Tissue Transplant allocation … A patient’s income/status has no bearing on allocation. The severity of illness, time spent waiting, blood type, medical profiling and compatibility ; & other vital medical information … determine Organ-Tissue allocation.
  • I have done my bit by pledging. Your responsibility is even greater after the pledge. Keep your family informed of your intent to donate your Organ-Tissue. And carry your DONOR Card along-with your identity documents, at all times.
  • Pledge CAN BE WITHDRAWN any time … “Organ-Tissue Donation” Pledge is an expression of interest, it is not legally binding. One can withdraw the pledge anytime.
  • Ultimately it is the Family’s consent and responsibility are important to enable the “Organ-Tissue Donation”. Keep them informed and inspired.
