Important Facts – “Eye (Cornea) Donation

1) Who can be an Eye donor?

Anyone can be a donor, irrespective of age, sex, blood group or religion. People who use lenses or spectacles for short sightedness, long sightedness or even those whose eyes are operated can still donate their eyes.

2) I am suffering from Diabetes, Can I still donate my eyes?

Diabetic patients or those who are suffering from hypertension, asthma can also donate their eyes. Anyone with cataract can also donate their eyes.

3) What are the conditions where one cannot donate eyes?

Persons who have communicable diseases & systemic infections like AIDS, hepatitis B or C, Rabies, Tetanus, Malaria cannot donate their eyes.

4) How quickly should corneas be removed after death?

The corneas should be removed as soon as possible, maximum within 6 hours of death.

5) Does eye donation disfigure the face?

No, It is a myth. Removal of the cornea does not cause any disfigurement. When the eyeball is removed, a transparent eye cap is placed in place of the eyeball.

6) In case of a person’s death, what are the immediate TO-DOs for eye donation?

  • Close the eyelids of the donor. Place a moist (not dripping) cloth over eyes
  • Switch off the fan; you can switch on the air -conditioner
  • Raise the head of the deceased slightly by placing a pillow underneath
  • Contact the nearest eye bank at 1919 as quickly as possible

7) What is the formality to be done for eye donation?

Eye Donation can be done only with the written consent of the next of kin in the presence of two witnesses. In case of donation of a child’s eyes, no witness is required of both parents are signing the consent.

8) Why should I donate my eyes?

It is a “Noble Gift of Light”. Donating your eyes can light up the life of two corneal blind people.

9) How can I pledge to donate my eyes?

You should fill the pledge form and send it to any of the nearest ‘Eye-Bank’ or ‘Organ-Donation Organization’. It is important to inform & request your family to fulfill your desire. Please keep your DONOR-CARD , alongwith your identity documents in your valet at all times.

10) How can I know where to donate eyes?

There is a 24-hour exclusive HELP LINE 1919 provided by BSNL and MTNL all over the country to facilitate easy access to the nearest eye bank.

11) When can I donate my eyes?

Eye donation can be pledged any time but donation is carried out only after death.

12) How are the identities AND costs involved handled?

The identities of both donor & recipient are kept confidential. It is illegal to buy & sell human eyes, organs & tissues. Any costs associated with eye transplant are borne by the eye bank.
